Men’s Health: Top 5 Concerns

By Josh Kauten

June is Men’s Health Month: designed to raise awareness for prevention and treatment of the most common health concerns.

Currently, here are the top five health concerns for men according to WebMD:

  • Heart Disease

  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

  • Stroke

  • Cancer (primarily prostate, lung & skin)

  • Depression & Suicide

These are all horrible diseases that are not only debilitating during treatment, but are very common causes for death in males. All five have very specialized treatment protocols, however, there is one common preventative treatment for all five diseases: regular exercise. Many studies have shown men who exercise on a regular basis have a much lower risk of facing any of these common health concerns.

Exercise can help reduce several risk factors for heart disease, COPD, stroke, and cancer, and has even been known to help treat some of these cases. Maintaining a base level of physical activity can lower your blood pressure, lower total cholesterol, increase HDL, improve heart and lung function, decrease your risk of getting type II diabetes, allow you to maintain a healthy weight and many, many other health benefits. Additionally, aerobic exercise can reduce the risk of depression and suicide. When you exercise, your body releases “feel-good” chemicals in the brain, known as endorphins, which can improve your mood, reduce anxiety and stress, and reduce the feeling of pain.

At Four Seasons, we understand that exercising on your own can seemingly be a difficult and confusing task.
